greg carr

drawn to art
Born in Ann Arbor Michigan, Greg began drawing around age 12. After creating a drawing that impressed himself and his family, Greg fell in love with the rush of creating the illusion of realism.

Originally Greg set out on a career in carpentry, but quickly realized he needed to be making art and be surrounded by other creatives. He attended the College for Creative Studies in Detroit Michigan, earning a Bachelor's in Fine Art with a concentration in Illustration.

After graduation, Greg spent six years working as a professional illustrator for a large marketing firm, honing his visual skills. He was also offered a position, shortly after he graduated, at his Alma Mater as an adjunct professor in the foundation department. He maintains this position and currently teaches online.

making it real
Greg pursued his passion for still-life painting in his spare time. He created a body of work and developed an Exhibition Resume while he was working as a professional illustrator. His dream of being a full-time professional painter became a reality in 2020 when he moved to Asheville, North Carolina in pursuit of that goal. While in Asheville, Greg immersed himself in the region’s active arts community and developed his now signature line of contemporary realist paintings of pop art food and beverage images.

Greg is now known for his witty style, juxtaposing the classical tradition of still life painting with contemporary food and drinks as his subjects. Most notably, Greg has been commissioned to paint many Cheez-It paintings, including one for the voice actor for the famous Cheez-It cheese wheel character "Immature Cheese”.

being seen
Greg enjoys a dialogue between life and painting and expresses that by combining the seriousness of painting with the depiction of things that make people smile. To learn more see the 2022 BON APETIT article below.
