“I've gained invaluable insights into the art world that extend far beyond the canvas. Clayton's approach demystified the business aspects of art, teaching me not just how to create, but how to connect, market, and sell my work effectively. The curriculum bridged the gap between artistic passion and practical business strategy, empowering us to navigate the complexities of the art market with confidence. FAQs
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for emerging and mid-career artists who want to level up the business side of their creative practice—pricing, marketing, selling, and presenting their work with confidence. It’s perfect for artists who are tired of the “starving artist” narrative and ready to build a sustainable, profitable practice.
How is the course structured?
The course is self-guided with new content unlocked weekly. You’ll get videos, worksheets, templates, and action steps you can complete on your own time. Each week, we also gather for a live office hour session where you can ask questions, get feedback, and apply the material to your real-world practice.
What topics are covered?
Topics may include:
Pricing your work with confidence
Finding and connecting with collectors
Building a brand that reflects your voice
Marketing fundamentals for artists
How to talk about your work
Selling online and in-person
Working with galleries, designers, and curators
Money mindset and long-term planning
How much time should I expect to commit each week?
Most weeks take 1–2 hours of self-guided learning, plus a 60-minute live office hour. You can go at your own pace and revisit materials anytime.
What if I can’t attend the live office hours?
No problem—all office hours are recorded and available to watch on your own schedule. You can also submit questions in advance if you can’t attend.
Do I need previous business experience?
Not at all. This course starts with the basics and builds step-by-step. It’s designed for creatives—not MBAs.
What materials do I need?
Just a laptop or device for watching videos, a notebook, optional art samples for portfolio-related exercises, and a willingness to show up for yourself.
Will I get personalized feedback?
Yes—office hours are where we get specific. You can ask questions, submit examples, get clarity on pricing, ask for feedback on your artist statement, etc.
Will this course help me make more sales?
Yes—if you do the work. This course gives you practical tools, proven strategies, and guidance honed through years of real-world gallery + art-industry experience. Many artists see increased sales, better opportunities, and more consistency after implementing the material.
Do you offer payment plans?
Yes, payment plans are available.
Can I get a refund?
No refunds due to immediate access to digital content
Is this course tax-deductible?
In many cases, yes—continuing education for your business/practice is often a deductible business expense. Check with your tax professional.
What makes The Business of Art different from other courses?
Because it’s rooted in real-world contemporary art experience, curation, selling, and relationships—not theory. The course distills everything you’ve learned from:
15+ years managing a major private art collection
Running multiple galleries
Working with hundreds of artists
Selling thousands of artworks
Curating major exhibitions
Artists get not just information but industry insight they can’t Google.
Can beginners take this course?
Absolutely. Whether you’re brand new or rediscovering your practice, the material is designed to meet you where you are and grow with you.
Will there be homework?
Think of it as “artist work” — small, high-impact exercises that move your practice forward. Many artists complete them during office hours.
What if I fall behind?
No stress. Because everything is self-guided, you can catch up anytime. The office hours remain valuable no matter where you are in the curriculum.
