artist statement
George Salter is an award-winning photographer and world traveler based in Rhode Island. For the past forty years he has specialized in street portraiture in countries all over the world, using photography as a medium to share the stories of daily struggles and joy written in the faces of people in their native lands. His travels have brought him to such places as Cuba, Bolivia, Egypt, Russia, Bhutan and, most recently, Ethiopia.
The Omo Valley in southwestern Ethiopia is home to some of the most remote tribes in all of Africa, still surviving and living their traditional lifestyles. One of the most fascinating ethnic groups is the Suri tribe, whose portraits are featured in the Omo Valley Collection.
